Garmin© Vista GPS HIt is ideal for serious hikers and climbers, the rugged eTrex Vista H features a high-sensitivity receiver. It has a detailed basemap, barometric altimeter, electronic compass and 24 megabytes (MB) of internal memory for extra data storage. The screen on this is not in color is approximately $80 dollars less than the Vista HCx listed below. Being newbie to GPS, it's exciting to see what a you can do with the Vista GPS and how to make it function correctly. The instruction manual is very not very helpful. Many menu features are not even displayed in the manual and the functions are not shown. There are no examples, only "press this button and do this or that". Examples would be nice in the manual. If you are already familiar with GPS receivers, then this should not be a problem for you. An inexperience person could spend a lot of time experimenting trying to figure out all of the funtions. The basemap is pretty simple and only has major roads. Maps are limited that you can purchase and the Garmin site does not accurately lists all that are available. Vista H should support all the maps the Vista supported, but Garmin's site says it does not. Expect to pay $110 to $130 for a map disk. Possibly the 100K topo map would be ideal since it shows streets in detail and interest locations. The topography is not accurate and hard to read.
