Garmin eTrex Legend GPS Receiver 

The Garmin eTrex Legend GPS is known as one of the smallest GPS systems on market and it has the entire North and South America basemap.  It is designed to go anywhere and to provide precise (within 2-3 meters) navigation using correction data from the Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) enabled GPS receiver.  There is 8 MB of flash memory instead of 24MB in the Garmin Vista.  It can store hundreds of detailed street maps, but it is limited if you live in a large metro area.  Although it is fine for doing point to point navigiation.

The eTrex Legend GPS system is made for more specific locations and it can do that, but as I stated earlier, you'll want more memory to put in the large metro areas. That is one of the drawbacks of this unit. It will provide a good estimation of your altitude and calculating your speed.  The screen is 288 x 160 pixels.  You can easily see location details and when it redraws maps when zooming, it's pretty quick.  While reading the menu, just keep it out of the bright sunlight so you can see the screen better.  Reception is good to track satellites unless there is some large building they way where the signal can be weak.  As you probably already know, this cannot be used indoors.

You can download the Metroguide USA CD-ROM which is not included which has a detailed street map info, addresses & points of interest with phone info so you can use this system in your vehicle.  You will not be able to put the whole CD on your Legend because there is only 8 MB of space available. 

The eTrex Lengend GPS handheld will run up between 14 -16 hours on just two AA batteries and track up to 12 satellites. The antenna is also internal and there is an external power and data connector which are protected as well. It can create and store names, and save up to 500 locations known as an electronic waypoint in its memory. On the outside of the handheld eTrex unit, there are 2 buttons on one side and 3 buttons on the other.  It is waterproof so it can be submerged in water briefly. Not advised to submerge it for long periods of time.

The eTrex GPS will help you get to where you need to go.  It does have a TracBack feature which provides a reverse course home if you are lost. The Garmin eTrex Legend GPS makes a great gift for that special someone, even if that someone is you. The eTrex GPS is priced reasonably so you can pick one up without too much of a dent in your wallet.
